In 1796 when the British took over from the Dutch, the importance of this fort gradually declined, since Colombo was made the base of operations. Some other major attractions are the Dutch Reformed Church, the Maritime Museum, the Old Dutch Hospital, the Meera Mosque, the Clock Tower and the Galle Lighthouse. Even today, the Galle fort remains to be the center of attraction for all visitors.
