One of the most popular attractions in Negombo, this estuarine lagoon is fed by a number of rivers and a small canal and connects to the sea via a narrow channel to the north. The lagoon is inclusive of the famous Muthurajawela marsh situated in its southern region.
The lagoon has a strong association with the prominent fishing industry in Negombo, with fishing taking place all year round, and employing 22 fishing methods, 13 of which are completely traditional. The land here largely supports agriculture and forestry, and is thus encircled by coconut estates, rice paddies and grasslands. Lagoon crabs (19 species) and prawns (12 species) caught here are in high demand and known to be extremely delicious.
Boat excursions along the smooth and tranquil waters of the Negombo Lagoon are tremendously popular among tourists. With glorious views of the mangrove marshes along the way, viewers can observe the splendid diversity of the water birds that visit the lagoon, which includes herons, egrets, cormorants, gulls, terns and other shorebirds. One can also watch the many local fisherman and their families engage in fishing in the lagoon and learn about the fascinating fishing culture in Negombo.
