The Lunuganga estate belonged to the late Geoffrey Bawa, and was his country home. It was designed by him, some say that he was inspired by his brother Bevis, who designed and landscaped the Brief Garden which was his residence as well. He started it in 1947 and was one of his experiments in the early stages of his architectural timeline. Even after its completion he continued to change the structure and spaces until he fell sick in 1998. Geoffrey Bawa was a visionary when it came to architecture and it clearly shows in his impressive buildings and hotels that are reputed.
It has been transformed into a country house hotel and open for the public after his demise in 2003; it still retains the old world charm of the 1940’s. It has six suites and furnished delicately with antiques and a modern touch, too – the perfect balance. There are plenty of garden pavilions like the Roman pavilion and Blue pavilion that are just for relaxation.
The garden accommodates personal and corporate functions along with bookings beforehand. Their niche is Sri Lankan food, and strives to provide guests with a genuine experience of a Sri Lankan home. Their menu is constantly being developed and includes international cuisines as well.
