Overview

Located along the picturesque tree lined road of Ananda Cooramawamy Mawatha (Green Path) Colombo 7 and next to the Colombo National Museum, this interactive gallery building built in colonial style, comprises of a permanent exhibition hall, Eastern hall and Western hall. The permanent exhibition hall has exhibits of statues, sculptures, portraits and landscapes that have been collected over the years. Whereas the Eastern and Western halls are usually hired by local artists who pay the National Museum a fee and reserve these halls for their own exhibitions. The Eastern hall measures 68 by 31 feet in size and the Western hall is 108 by 32 feet.
The National Art Gallery is the place to witness the growing changes and transformations of Sri Lanka’s culture from ancient traditions to modernism. Young artists, art students and upcoming artists are given plenty of opportunities to showcase their talents and establish names for them in the industry.
The gallery walls are adorned with numerous paintings on canvas displaying a synthesis of colour, style and texture. With the help and direction of the administrators or artists responsible for the displays, you would get a better understanding of each creation. This building is set in a beautiful open area with plenty of garden and space to stroll around and there is a café for a snack and drink.
