Founded in 1889, the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in Asia and probably in the world. A colonial masterpiece, steeped in history and tradition, it has an incomparable atmosphere in Sri Lanka.
The British planters of colonial Ceylon, who introduced Tea, founded this establishment for their rest and recreation. Today, it still continues to keep with the traditions of Colonial history. The archaic blend of old world charm and modernism yields an ambience of distinguish and character.
Located in the heart of Nuwara Eliya amidst surroundings of tea covered hills and valleys, the club has an aura of a difference since upon entering the premises, one would be taken back into time reflecting to colonial era.
The club has a 18-hole course which is 6399 yards long and is a testing par 71 which comprises of long, narrow fairways fringed by tall bellowing eucalyptus trees and slender cypresses bound together by thick shrubbery. The grass on the green has a mix of local grass and blue grass. There are many hills and valleys and water perils which are tough challenges for the serious golfer. Although there are many obstacles, it does give plenty of pleasure and leisure to the seasoned player and as well as the eager amateur.
The Nuwara Eliya Golf Club has been noted as one of the friendliest clubs in Sri Lanka as it provides services which are family oriented and giving professional lessons, therefore they give a full rounded experience for each and everyone.
