Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil also referred to as Kapikaawatha Shivan Temple is a popular attraction and must visit places located in Colombo. Back in the days it was also referred to as the Captain’s Garden Kovil. This Kovil is the oldest Hindu Temple in Colombo and is devoted to Gods Ganesha and Shiva and is one of the most popular matrimonial venues. This Hindu Temple is said to have been built by a group of Indian Chetti traders known as Thiruvilanga Nakarathar.
The vibrant main tower consists of intricate sculptures, stone carved masterpieces and a detailed lotus- carved main door. There are carvings of an astrology chart and various paintings of Gods and Goddesses. The inner roof of the temple is adorned with stunning murals. While the main shrine is dedicated to God Shiva, there are other shrines of Gods and Goddesses of the Hindu religion.
Entrance to this Hindu Temple is free and visitors should dress modestly and be respectful at all times.
