Overview

Sri Lanka as a country is steeped in tradition, therefore there are many different aspects that reflect its cultural identity – the beeralu lace is an ancient art stemming from the days of past kingdoms. At present, in Dickwella they are reviving this ancient craft making it popular amongst the fashion industry. This initiative has brought together more than 90 unemployed women who have all learnt basic business skills, design, and marketing and sales that has in turn inspired the development of new lace designs and products. Women in the area and local villages are trained and provided with the skills that they develop over time – it is definitely a talent. It is their basic source of income that’s very important to them. Despite the fact that most of them earn very little, they are just as engaged in it as they were a decade ago.
It is enchanting to watch them transform the lace material into beautiful intricately woven clothes and other products. By purchasing their creations you will be supporting these ladies and simultaneously keeping this traditional craft alive in the 21st century.
