Overview

Enshrouded in myth and legend, a natural phenomenon that stands tall and magnificent, the Laggala rock, also known as Lakegala, Lankagiri, and the ‘The Resplendent Rock’ is located near Dunuwila. It is associated with the Ramayana legend because ‘Elakka Gala’ in Sinhala means ‘Target rock.’ Mythology has depicted that the Lankapura of King Ravana, the capital of his kingdom was found here. Since it sits almost in the centre of the country and forms the tail end of the Dumbara Hills (Knuckles Mountain range), Laggala served as a guard point for Ravana’s army. It was also the point where Rama’s army was sighted by King Ravana’s soldiers. The rock is said to be where Rama killed King Ravana with the Brahmasthram weapon from Dunuwila. It is significant because it was the point where the war begun and also where the final battle took place.
