Overview

Situated in the vicinity of the border between the Kandy and Matale districts, Meemure is a small, isolated village with a population of about 400, tucked away in the Knuckles Mountain Range. Located 50 kilometers away from the city of Kandy, it is accessible only through Hunnasgiriya. This village is encompassed by Lakegala Mountain from the east, Knuckles mountain range from the west, Heen River to the south and a forest spreading out towards Pitawala Pathana to the north. According to folklore, this village is more than 5000 years old and it is believed that Lakegala had belonged to King Ravana. Another folklore states that when King Vijaya banished Kuweni (his wife) and two children from the castle, they seeked refuge in the forest where Meemure is now located. It is widely believed that the indigenous people are descendants from these two children of Kuweni. If you wish to alienate yourself for a few days or just a few hours, then Meemure is the place, with no cellular service or direct mail delivery.
