Overview

A visit to the Koggala lake; with its rich biodiversity and eco system will leave all you nature-lovers in complete and utter bliss. However, it is a place that has been relatively untouched by visitors to the south and therefore is peaceful and quiet. The lagoon consists of eight small islands such as the Mangrove Island (Madol Duwa), Cinnamon Island, Kathduwa and so on. Through the novel ‘Madol Duwa’ written by Martin Wickramasinghe, the island of Madol Duwa gained significant importance and popularity. At the Cinnamon Island, visitors have the opportunity to explore and learn about the process of cinnamon production. A visit to the spice garden (located on the bank of the lagoon) will provide the chance to see how spices are being produced. These small islets are made up of rich mangrove swamps. There are a few streams connected to this lagoon but it is mainly fed by rainwater. A boat trip around the lake to explore these beautiful islands is a must do. Visitors have the ability to spot different varieties of mangroves and they can also witness wildlife in action. The Kathaluwa Old Temple is also situated on such an island with murals dating back to the 19th century.
