Overview

The Pidurutalagala Mountain or Mount Pedro in English, is located 7.5 km from Nuwara Eliya, and is the highest peak in Sri Lanka. Unlike other highland peaks, it has a flattened mountain peak which is covered with green patna. Pidurutalagala Mountain gives extraordinary and magnificent views. It also hosts many of the local broadcasting stations such as Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation which is why this area is a high security zone.
It is not just a mountain but also has a forest reserve rich in biodiversity of endemic species of plants, flora and fauna. There is a distinct difference between the characteristic features of this forest reserve and the lowland forests, since the trees here look like knotted trunks with many forked branches with lichens and moss adhered to it which depicts typical characteristics of a cloud forest.
During the colonial period, only walking and horse riding was possible to reach the peak but today, there is opportunity to travel by vehicle once permission is obtained. As the vehicle enters the security zone, it has to continue driving without stopping nor can anyone get down from the vehicle till the Upper Security point at the summit. However, the drive is scenic with panoramas of flowering trees and plants and also gorgeous vistas of the island which would make for memorable photographs to cherish.
