Overview

This lagoon is mostly surrounded by mangroves and the main source of freshwater supply is through the Kirama-Oya River (Tangalu-oya River). One of the main sources of income for the residents in this area is shrimp fishery. The white shrimp is the most important shrimp species found in this lagoon when it comes to trading purposes. In this lagoon mangrove species such as Lumnitzera racemosa, Bruguiera gymnorhiza, Avicennia marina, and Aegiceras corniculatum have been discovered and there are a variety of fish, crustaceans and birds to which this mangrove is home.
