This spectacular cascade can be observed from the Hatton – Nuwara Eliya Road (A7 Highway) itself. It is located 6 kilometres west of Talawakele, Nuwara Eliya District. This tiered 97 meter waterfall contains three drops. Ranked the 19th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, it a glorious spectacle to behold.
A stunning view of Devon Falls could be witnessed from a special viewpoint established on the highway in Dimbulla, which is even inclusive of parking amenities. The renowned Mlesna Tea centre is located just opposite the viewpoint, where one can relish a freshly brewed cup of tea. Another observation point is located at the Watagoda Railway Station, situated 10 kilometres away from the Thalawakele Railway Station. It is said that thick canopy forests once surrounded the Falls that was home to a variety of endemic species. The waterfall is formed by Kotmale Oya, a branch of Mahaweli River which is the longest river in the island. The waterfall was titled after the revolutionary English coffee planter, Devon, whose plantation lay in close proximity to the Falls.
Deplorably, Devon Falls is among the 7 waterfalls that are affected as a result of the Upper Kotmale Hydropower Project and the cascade that is expected to be impacted the most.
