Kandyan Dancing and Cultural Shows

Kandy is well renowned for Sri Lankan art and culture which stemmed from the heritage of Sri Lanka’s ancient Kandyan Kingdom. Therefore Kandyan dancing originated from the Nayakker rulers of that era when dancing became regular in the Royal Court. It plays an important role in the culture of Sri Lanka and is one of the most revered features of the Perahera even now. Adorned with jiggling anklets, intricate beads, jingling bangles, elaborate headgear and vibrant colourful flowing costumes, the dancers perform spectacular acrobatic movements. Although the Kandyan dance was originally initiated for men, women today perform it with such pomp and pageantry for they have created their own style of costume and moves. Kandyan dancing flourished from spreading beyond Kandy for which it was named and has generated many dance schools throughout the island and overseas.
