Amidst uneven mountain peaks, lies the beautiful and wide slopes of Moon Plains which is the latest attraction of the Hill country, located few kilometres off Nuwara Eliya. Once a garbage disposal dump site, this area was cleared, rehabilitated and eventually classified as an Agricultural and Environmental Tourism Zone by the Municipality of Nuwara Eliya in 2010.
Covered with carpets of grass, this landscape gained popularity as the ‘second world’s end’ since it gives a magnificent 360 degree view of the surrounding peaks including Pidurutalagala Mountain from the apex of a sharp drop of a cliff. The Moon Plains is surrounded by cloud forests with extraordinary biodiversity of flora and fauna which are similar in characteristic of Horton Plains. The excursion at Moon Plains takes only two hours as opposed to 6-8 hours at Horton Plains, so if on a short break with less time on hand, the excursion here would be the ideal alternative experience for hiking or cycling. The view from the mini world’s end at sunrise is noteworthy for the spectacular dawn of golden sunrays amidst the mist over the surrounding peaks and valleys which make for the picture perfect capture.
The access to Moon Plains is from Seetha Eliya Farm (Potato Seed Farm) which is on the upper lake road. The Plains is open from 7am-5pm daily and the entry fee for Foreign National is Rs 250.
